Eden Green
East 133rd Street and South Indiana Avenue, Chicago, Illinois
Eden Green Apartments project, completed in 2007, consisted of the complete rehabilitation of 38 existing two story affordable townhouse and apartment buildings, with a total of 258 apartments and townhouses, set in a large commons configuration on 17 acres on the far south side of Chicago. Design decisions involved re-configuring and reducing the size of select buildings to widen approach lanes within the interior circulation pattern. In addition all buildings received a substantial exterior repair and cosmetic improvement consisting of adding awnings, dormers, entry canopies and architectural roof and cornice elements to create a visual cohesion previously absent. All apartment and townhouse interiors received new finishes, appliances, electrical wiring and fixtures as well as new mechanical equipment. At the center of the site, an existing community building was repaired and rehabilitated. To aid in the future management of the complex, one of the existing residential buildings was selected to be partially demolished down to foundation, leaving a two story end portion as residential. On top of the remaining existing foundation a new one story management office was constructed.
