Pettit Chapel

Belvidere, Illinois

This 1982 restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's nondenominational Pettit Chapel was truly completed on a shoe string budget:  $45,000.  The building was constructed in 1907,during the same period as Unity Temple, for the widow of local Dr. William H. Pettit.  By the early eighties the building had fallen into extreme disrepair. However, through careful investigation and research with the Taliesin archives and the Wasmuth portfolio, the building was successfully restored to its original construction, including missing interior trim, window fenestration details, original paint colors, and architectural decorative piers  that simply went missing.
