Lakeside Press Building

731 South Plymouth Court, Chicago, Illinois

Part of Chicago's south loop Printing House Row Historic District, this 8 story building originally designed in 1876 by Howard Van Doren Shaw was adaptively re-used as 96 apartments plus ground floor and lower level commercial space in 1982.  Restoration of the exterior envelope, including the historic window mullion configuration carefully followed the Secretary of the Interior's guidelines and criteria established in a Landmark Preservation Council facade easement.  High ceilings and the 100 feet of depth from street to alley encouraged creative use of space with partial height partitions allowing daylight to flow through to the central corridor and an open plan - one of the first 'loft-type' apartment configurations ever approved by HUD.
