Zapata Apartments

Scattered Sites, West Armitage-Logan Square, Chicago, Illinois

Zapata Apartments, completed in 2013, consists of 4 buildings and 66 new affordale apartments on four different sites along West Armitage - fulfilling a much needed role in helping to complete the urban fabric by infilling vacant sore spots along this historic corridor.  Highly contextual in design, yet innovative in their efficiency, both economically and energy-wise, these buildings provide much needed affordable housing in a diverse and growing community.  The flagship building at 1955 North St. Louis has proven to be a real and visual anchor to the neighborhood.  This 4 story elevator building provides 30 affordable, high quality, accessible and energy efficient apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms on the second through fourth floors.  The first floor is dedicated to a combination of open and covered parking along with a rentable tenant retail space currently under lease by a healthcare services provider.   The remaining buildings, a three unit building at 3503 W. Armitage, a 12 unit building at 3230 West Armitage and a sixteen unit building at 3727 West Cortland are all three story walk up residential buildings.  All meet the rigorous Energy Star and Enterprise Green Communities energy efficiency programs.  Two have green roofs and two buildings also incorporate solar hot water collectors at the roof.
